Each diaper tells a lot about your baby’s overall health. During the first year of life, a baby goes through different poop colours & consistencies according to the change in her diet. A newborn’s first stool is likely to be greenish -black with a tar-like sticky consistency. This is called meconium, and it is made of mucus, skin cells, amniotic fluid and other substances your baby might have swallowed in the womb. Black stool shouldn’t last more than a couple of days.

If your baby is exclusively breastfed, her stools will become yellow or slightly green, or sometimes brown and have a mushy or creamy consistency and seedy texture. Breastfed poop can look like mustard-coloured cottage cheese, and may be dotted with little seed-like flecks. Sometimes it resembles diarrhoea. It often smells very sweet.

Formula-fed babies have firmer stools that are often of similar colour and texture to peanut butter. The colour can vary from tan-brown or yellow-brown, to green-brown.

Formula-fed poop also smells a bit more like adult poop than breastfed poop does.
