Doctor Visit

Firstly, visit your doctor so that you can discuss your medical history, existing medical conditions (if any), current medications (if any), if you should take any supplements or tests etc. Overall, he/she can guide you regarding the first steps to take while considering pregnancy.

A well-balanced diet plan

Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any stage of life. Being
overweight or underweight both may cause serious complications during pregnancy. A well-balanced diet consisting of whole grains, dals, milk and milk products, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, nuts, fish / chicken / egg (if you are a non-vegetarian) etc is crucial in case you are considering pregnancy. You can discuss your appropriate diet plan with your doctor or a nutritionist.

Quit Smoking & Drinking

Stopping smoking and drinking alcohol are of utmost importance in order to have a healthy pregnancy. Tobacco and alcohol both are tremendously harmful for babies and can cause premature birth, birth defects and even death.

Supplements

Talk to your doctor regarding the supplements you should take. Usually folic acid, iron, zinc, calcium – these are important nutrients during this phase.

Limit your caffeine intake

Try to keep your caffeine intake within 200 mg per day (equivalent to 2 standard size cup; not the coffee mugs). Caffeine is also available in chocolates, tea, some energy drinks, soft drinks (cola) etc. Hence, practice a little caution.

Reduce your stress level

We know that it’s easier said than done, but pregnancy is a great reason to give it a try. Don’t think about things that are not in your hands and try to reduce your stress level. Do yoga, read good books, listen to good music, watch good movies & just RELAX.

Keep a track of your cycle

Keeping a close track of your menstrual cycle can help you plan your
pregnancy well. Usually, for a 28-day cycle, the fertile window is from 9th to 15th days (counting starts from the 1st day of your period) and 14th day is the most fertile one.

Exercise

Start taking up an exercise or physical activity regime as per your choice and convenience. Some popular options are walking, jogging, swimming, free-hand exercise or yoga.

Some factors which can cause negative impact on sperm count are

  1. Alcohol
  2. Tobacco
  3. Steroids and harmful illegal drugs

Hence, talk to your partner about healthy diet and lifestyle choices. Beginning with a few steps can take you a long way.
