School age children require healthy foods and proper nutrition throughout the day to keep up with their busy & super active lifestyle. They grow steadily but slowly and it requires them tohave food four to five times a day (including snacks).

A few useful tips for your big kiddo’s healthy eating plan

  1. Incorporate all types of foods like grains, proteins, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats etc in his/her diet.
  2. Research has shown that skipping breakfast may have adverse effects on younger children. Make sure your child eats a good breakfast everyday.
  3. Select foods especially rich in calcium, iron, proteins.
  4. Snacks are an important source of nutrition for this age group kids. These snacks may provide up to one-third of the total calorie intake for the day. Provide nutritious and energy – dense foods.
  5. Make sure they drink lots of water and other healthy fluids (lassi, buttermilk, fruit juice etc) throughout the day.
  6. Involve children in meal planning and preparation.
  7. Sit together during the meal time and eat as a family.
  8. Limit their screen time and encourage them to get involved in outdoor activities.
  9. Limit their intake of sugary & fatty foods.
  10. Teach them from an early age about the healthy foods and healthy eating habits. Awareness can make a huge difference.
  11. Present foods in an attractive manner.
  12. Please remember that kids learn mostly by seeing. So, be a good role model. Show them what healthy eating means.
